Scared of Nothing by ~Chronus:iconChronus:

Behind my mask, I’m scared of nothing!
I’m scared of nothing!
I’m scared I’m nothing!

Superficial understandings of our own motives,
Superficial interpretations of others’ actions,
Paint our masks,
Paint their masks.

Generalized convoluted processes,
Make socialization possible!
Generalizing convoluted processes,
Is how we understand ourselves!

We conceptualize concrete characterizations,
Made of concrete too hard to break.
But why would we want to break it?
Without our concrete masks we might be nothing!

A hundred billion neurons,
Explained in just a few choice words.
A hundred million procedures,
Simplified to one process.

Behind our masks, there is nothing to fear!
We don’t peek behind the masks,
Because we’re so scared of nothing!

Author's Comments

Part of the Irrelevance series. Possibly the last addition to the series.

“Every profound spirit needs a mask; nay, more, around every profound spirit there continually grows a mask, owing to the constantly false, that is to say, superficial interpretation of every word he utters, every step he takes, every sign of life he manifests.”
Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil

I disagree with Nietzsche. First of all, masks grow around all of us, the "profound" and those left out of this exclusive group. And I think Nietzsche believed the mask grows around a "spirit" due to others interpreting that spirit superficially. Didn't he realize we are usually the main contributors to our own masks?

I'm not even gonna lie. This one is too deep for me. I can't read betweent he lines or whatever.

I get some of it I think but not enough to say anything intelligent.
:iconbellaciao:
Some of the lines are a tad awkward, but that seems a tiny thing compared to the overall quality of the poem. I'm not entirely certain what you were trying to say (since it's still morning, and I'm not awake) but I'll try to respond to what I think you were saying.

The kind of masks you speak about is something that a lot of people (everyone?) fight-- their own, and other peoples. I mean, once you get to know someone REALLY well, it's much harder to put a label to them. When you really think about it, no label fits you perfectly, either. On the other hand, we define ourselves and each other by those same labels. It's like jabbing a lumpy, knotty twig into a round hole and hoping it fits.

I only need to lose a few protons, then I can be popular!

Mad, perhaps; I am certain they will say so. But those who dance are always thought mad--by those who won't hear the music.

People are often criticized for labelling others. But we label ourselves as well. And as soon as the label is there, it's hard not to think that is an absolute quality of your self. It causes us to think there is a continuous self, that we aren't plastic.

Fuck dualism.

Or something.

Anyways, thanks for the comment, and you weren't too far off with your suggested meaning. I don't think I can say absolutely what the meaning of it is, I can just allude to it (as I did above). If I had an easy way to say an idea, I would just say it instead of writing it in cryptic poetry.

I think I failed at replying! Cool.
